Opening Session: Diversity: Exclusion, Seclussion and Inclusion...What Does It All Mean? (Click to show/hide full description.) To celebrate diversity is to celebrate another person’s journey while embracing your own. Oftentimes, we misunderstand and believe the final destination of diversity is to be seen, when in fact, to celebrate is to hear, listen and empathize. Inclusion is the key!! Without it we remain an ignorant generation separated on islands of stereotyping, prejudice, and the many worlds of –isms.
Presenter: Tyrone C. Black, Director of College Counseling, Cheshire Academy, 10 Main Street, Cheshire, CT 06410, (203-272-5396 (phone)) (203-439-7202 (Fax)) (tyrone.black@cheshireacademy.org)
NEACRAO is pleased to announce that Tyrone C. Black the Director of College Counseling at Cheshire Academy will serve as our opening speaker. This thought-provoking, feature-length documentary interweaves the untold stories of triumph and tragedy from the members of society who are often disregarded and ignored, and seeks out the kind of wisdom that gets you through the day and the lessons one learns from surviving hard times, lost loves, and shattered dreams.

Session: 1-C New and Experienced Registrar’s Forum
You’ve been working at the Registrar’s Office for 25 years, there’s nothing you haven’t seen, or is there? You have just been hired at the Registrar’s Office and you have 600 degree audits to conduct, while working on the course catalog and implementing a new student data system, all without a procedures manual. What will you do next? This session will offer advice on best practices from seasoned registrar staff members and those new to the profession. As registrar members, we all face consistent challenges such as: students, time management, organization, FERPA, staff issues, relationships with other offices, and parents. How do our colleagues deal with these issues that allow them to function as great administrators and as people too? Our panel consists of long term members of the profession and newer members, to offer advise and reflect on their experiences to the audience. This is a great forum to get some new ideas or share your own for best practices in a Registrar’s Office.

Luncheon/Keynote Speaker: Myra Hindus--Developing our Cultural Intelligence: Navigating Difference in Today’s Complex World
This talk will focus on building our cultural intelligence: the ability to deal with and work with people who are different than us. In higher education, more than ever, these challenges face staff, students and faculty on a daily basis. What kind of tools and knowledge do we need to effectively navigate in a diverse, increasingly complex workplace and world?
How do we define diversity and how do these issues effect us in our everyday work? How do we create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone in our institutions and how does this impact both recruitment and retention? How would you describe the culture in your institution regarding diversity and inclusion?
All of these questions will be raised, some answers posed, and a workshop immediately following will explore these issues, in more detail, in an interactive environment. |

L'Shir was established at The University of Hartford in the Spring of 2000 with assistance from the Hart- ford Hillel Foundation. The Diversions are an all-female A Cappella group at Mount Holyoke College. Founded in 2003, they perform a variety of contemporary songs. The Diversions regularly perform on campus and travel to other colleges as well.
