2010 Annual Meeting &
Reverse College Day

Diversity: Learning and Celebrating our Differences

Newport, RI

NOVEMBER 3-5, 2010

(More info about the area...a great place to visit!)

Building on over 60 years of experience as a leader in higher education, our 63rd annual meeting will be held November 3-5, 2010 in Newport, Rhode Island at the Newport Marriott. The hotel has been completely renovated since the last time we were there.

Newport is home to spectacular coastal scenery, awe-inspiring architecture, a thriving waterfront downtown, and welcoming hospitality, Newport, Rhode Island is considered by many to be a shining gem in the coastal crown of New England. From weekend getaways spent touring the famed Gilded Age mansions that once were the summer playground for socialite families with names like Astor and Vanderbilt to an afternoon of wine tasting through Newport's three scenic vineyards, the options for interesting activities, distinctive stories, and enticing photo opportunities are countless!

We hope you join us for an impressive conference in this spectacular New England setting. This cost-effective conference (only $150 for members) offers a unique opportunity to connect with your fellow NEACRAOans who are facing the same challenges of doing more with less. Please think about having others in your organization join us, even if it’s only for one day of the conference (lunch is included on Thursday). This is one of the best, inexpensive professional development venues in our region. Please pass the word on. You can find more details about the conference at:

  • Luncheon:  College/university representatives and high school counselors participate in the luncheon for continued networking. – Fabulous prizes for high school counselors drawn every year that are donated by colleges and universities.
  • Workshops:  Professional development workshops are scheduled following the luncheon.  Newer college professionals are encouraged to participate as well.

Annual Meeting Highlights

  • Movie The Philosopher Kings (Wednesday evening)
In search of wisdom found in unlikely places, The Philosopher Kings takes us on a journey through the halls of the most prestigious colleges and universities in America to learn from the staff members who see it all and have been through it all: the custodians. This thought-provoking, feature-length documentary interweaves the untold stories of triumph and tragedy from the members of society who are often disregarded and ignored, and seeks out the kind of wisdom that gets you through the day and the lessons one learns from surviving hard times, lost loves, and shattered dreams.

  • Luncheon/Keynote Speaker: Myra Hindus--Developing our Cultural Intelligence: Navigating Difference in Today’s Complex World (Thursday)
This talk will focus on building our cultural intelligence: the ability to deal with and work with people who are different than us.  In higher education, more than ever, these challenges face staff, students and faculty on a daily basis.  What kind of tools and knowledge do we need to effectively navigate in a diverse, increasingly complex workplace and world?

How do we define diversity and how do these issues effect us in our everyday work?  How do we create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone in our institutions and how does this impact both recruitment and retention?  How would you describe the culture in your institution regarding diversity and inclusion?

All of these questions will be raised, some answers posed, and a workshop immediately following will explore these issues, in more detail, in an interactive environment.

  • An Evening of A Cappella (Thursday evening)
Join us for an evening of music featuring L’Shir, The Diversions, University of Connecticut Conn-Men, Cliff Notes and Pitches with Attitude.  Enjoy your dinner as five fantastic a cappella groups perform and entertain.  This is a great place to connect with others, kick back and enjoy some great music.

Dinner is $25 with a choice of New York Strip Steak, Miso Grilled Salmon, Organic Statler Chicken Breast, or roasted vegetable tower.  It comes with house salad and desert.

    L'Shir
was established at The University of Hartford in the Spring of 2000 with assistance from the Hart- ford Hillel Foundation. Originally an all-Jewish a cappella group, L'Shir has evolved into one of many denominations. The group also stays true to their roots in continuation of the traditional performance of "Shalom Rav" a poignant arrangement written by one of their founding alumni, Benjamin Rauch, in response to the September 11 attacks.

    The Diversions
are an all-female A Cappella group at Mount Holyoke College. Founded in 2003, they perform a variety of contemporary songs. The Diversions regularly perform on campus and travel to other colleges as well.

    The University of Connecticut Conn-Men
characterized by individual vocal development, originality, musicality, and personal loyalty to the group. Because of their dedication to always being the best they can possibly be, the Conn-Men consistently leave audiences wanting more.

The Cliff Notes and Pitches with Attitude are two local a cappella groups from Salve Regina University.  The Cliff Notes is an all male group, while Pitches with Attitude is an all female group.

College Representatives for Reverse College Day (RCD):

We hope all of the high school and college representatives are looking forward to RCD and NEACRAO in Newport, Rhode Island. Please plan to attend the RCD program. This year’s sessions provide additional opportunities for us to discuss the college admissions and high school guidance process together.  As always we will do the raffle and college give-a-ways to the high school counselors.

FRIENDLY REMINDER TO COLLEGE REPS:
Don’t forget to bring give-a-ways to the RCD luncheon!
