President's Letter

Greetings fellow NEACRAO members!

And so it begins…another academic year is underway. Much is happening…we are all so very busy and contributing much of our energy to the success of our students and our institutions. As we give of ourselves at our colleges and universities, let us not forget to give to ourselves the benefit of connecting with colleagues and participating in the professional development opportunities that NEACRAO can offer us to enhance our career and knowledge base!  Please join us for the Annual Meeting in Portland, Maine in November!

While we all contend with fiscal constraints, budget cuts, and staff shortages, now more than ever, it remains important to continue to build bridges together between admissions, enrollment and registration professionals as we strive to meet institutional goals and NEASC standards. If you or your staff are unable to attend AACRAO this coming year in New Orleans, it will be helpful to attend our nearby NEACRAO meeting to exchange ideas with “neighbors” and gain a perspective on our regional accreditation issues.  As you update your calendars for the fall semester, don’t forget to save the dates of November 4-6, 2009.

Our volunteer committee members and board members have designed a more comprehensive and focused group of sessions this year. We hope you will join us to benefit from their work and thank them for their contributions. We adjusted the timeline for our annual meeting this year in order to invite you to attend a pre-conference enterprise software users’ group workshop on Reverse College Day – the first day of our annual meeting. That Wednesday evening we invite all attendees to the President's reception to kick-off events. Barmak Nassirian will give our keynote speech at lunch with a focus on the Higher Education Reauthorization Act, and for our newest members, we will again host a First-Timers breakfast to welcome you into our organization.

As we celebrate the 62nd year of NEACRAO, this year promises to be the start of something new as we continue to build bridges, work to cultivate new ideas, learn about new technologies, and inspire greater connections with colleagues. We have a new presence on Facebook.com (search for NEACRAO). We look forward to you joining your fellow NEACRAOans there and at the upcoming annual meeting in Portland, Maine!

Be well,

Irene Rios

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

2009 Annual Meeting & Reverse College Day

Portland, ME

NOVEMBER 4-6, 2009

(More info about the area...a great place to visit!)

Building on over 60 years of experience as a leader in higher education, our 62nd annual meeting will be held November 4-6, 2009 in Portland, Maine at the Holiday Inn By the Bay, the largest convention facility in the state. Winner of many Awards, the hotel ranks in the top 10% of Holiday Inns around the globe.

Portland is an old seacoast town. It is also a funky city filled with galleries, one-of-kind boutiques and shops, and incredible restaurants serving everything from New England clam chowder, lobster rolls and Maine seafood to nouvelle cuisine.

Portland stands as one of the few working waterfronts left in the United States, acting as New England’s largest tonnage seaport and second largest fishing port.

Portland is Maine’s largest city with 66,000 full time residents; however it swells to 2 million if one includes annual visitors and part-time residents.

At every turn, Portland is an experience for everyone.

Check back later in the year for more information about the conference! Hope to see you there.

Were You on Vacation Last Week?

If so, it’s possible that you were not able to respond to the email survey that was sent out to you regarding enterprise software use to help the committee for Professional Development determine pre-conference meetings between enterprise software users and their respective vendors. Click here to access the survey. Deadline to submit survey has been extended to September 8th.

Your input is appreciated!

NEACRAO’s Keynote Speaker for the 62nd Annual Meeting is AACRAO’s Barmak Nassirian—A Washington Update

The Obama Administration faces daunting challenges in its efforts to resuscitate the economy and put the nation back on track for growth and prosperity. Throughout the campaign, the President repeatedly identified higher education as key to restoring the American standard of living, but offered little by way of details in how he might deal with higher education issues. This session provides an overview of the higher education priorities of the new Administration and the 111th Congress, and how these might affect colleges and universities and the students they serve.

Barmak Nassirian has served as Associate Executive Director of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) since 1998. Nassirian has been active in higher education policy for nearly two decades, focusing on access and financing issues, educational privacy, and federal regulations.

He is regular speaker at AACRAO’s annual meeting. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to hear him speak, you are in for a treat!

The keynote is scheduled for Thursday, November 5, 2009, 12:15 – 1:45 p.m.

College Representatives for Reverse College Day (RCD):

We hope all of the high school and college representatives are looking forward to RCD and NECRAO in Portland, Maine. Please plan to attend the RCD program, this year we will offer more sessions which will provide additional opportunities for us to discuss the college admissions and high school guidance process together.  In addition, we are changing the way we do the raffle and college give-a-ways to the high school counselors.  We believe the added sessions and inclusive opportunity for open discussion will make the conference more successful for all!

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you.

FRIENDLY REMINDER TO COLLEGE REPS:
Don’t forget to bring give-a-ways to the RCD luncheon!
