President's Letter

Greetings fellow NEACRAO members!

Dear friends,

As another school year begins, I hope you are settling in and enjoying a wonderful time of year in New England.  Now that we have tucked away the beach towels, cleaned the sand out of our cars, and enjoyed the last of the “fair food,” we’re now ready to get our sweaters out of storage, visit the local apple orchard and wonder how there can be so many leaves in our yard!  It is certainly a time for fresh starts!

If you are looking for a place to get re-energized, you may want to consider the NEACRAO conference that will take place at the Newport Marriott in Newport, Rhode Island on November 3 – 5.  Not only will you find exciting ideas and meet knowledgeable colleagues, you will do so in one of New England’s most picturesque communities.  There are many interesting sessions this year.  They include:

§  Developing our Cultural Intelligence: Navigating Difference in Today’s Complex World

§  Social Networking and the Registrar’s Office

§  Changing Places: New Jobs, New Faces

§  Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Collaborations

§  Enterprise System Roundtable Discussion

In addition, there are a number of unique events planned for the evenings.  On Wednesday, November 3, The Philosopher Kings will be shown.  The quote from the movie’s web site says it all, “In search of wisdom found in unlikely places, The Philosopher Kings takes us on a journey through the halls of the most prestigious colleges and universities in America to learn from the staff members who see it all and have been through it all: the custodians.”  This movie has won awards including the Emerging Cinematic Vision Award at the Camden International Film Festival and Special Judges Mention at the Newburyport International Film Festival.  You are invited to a discussion of the movie on Thursday, November 4.

The Thursday evening event has become a much anticipated tradition for NEACRAO.  On Thursday November 4, you are invited to doo-wop that night away!  You will enjoy a delicious dinner that will feature an exciting evening of A Cappella.  Performances will feature Mount Holyoke Community College’s The Diversions, University of Hartford’s L’Shir, Salve Regina University’s Cliff Notes and Pitches with Attitude, and The University of Connecticut’s Conn-Men.  These A Cappella groups are eager to perform and entertain!

This conference could not happen without the tremendous work of your colleagues who tirelessly volunteer their time and talent.  As a NEACRAO volunteer, I am so grateful to have the opportunity to work with some of the most caring, clever and wise people in higher education.  I invite you to consider volunteering to join this wonderful group of people.  If you can’t volunteer, please know your ideas and feedback are welcomed and valued.  Please feel free to contact me any time at kposey@bennington.edu.

Happy Autumn!

Kathy

(More info about the area...a great place to visit!)

Building on over 60 years of experience as a leader in higher education, our 63rd annual meeting will be held November 3-5, 2010 in Newport, Rhode Island at the Newport Marriott. The hotel has been completely renovated since the last time we were there.

Newport is home to spectacular coastal scenery, awe-inspiring architecture, a thriving waterfront downtown, and welcoming hospitality, Newport, Rhode Island is considered by many to be a shining gem in the coastal crown of New England. From weekend getaways spent touring the famed Gilded Age mansions that once were the summer playground for socialite families with names like Astor and Vanderbilt to an afternoon of wine tasting through Newport's three scenic vineyards, the options for interesting activities, distinctive stories, and enticing photo opportunities are countless!

We hope you join us for an impressive conference in this spectacular New England setting. This cost-effective conference (only $150 for members) offers a unique opportunity to connect with your fellow NEACRAOans who are facing the same challenges of doing more with less. Please think about having others in your organization join us, even if it’s only for one day of the conference (lunch is included on Thursday). This is one of the best, inexpensive professional development venues in our region. Please pass the word on. You can find more details about the conference at:

NEACRAO’s Keynote Speaker for the 63rd Annual Meeting is Myra Hindus-- “Developing our Cultural Intelligence: Navigating Difference in Today’s Complex World”

This year’s keynote address will focus on building our cultural intelligence: the ability to deal with and work with people who are different than us.  In higher education, more than ever, these challenges face staff, students and faculty on a daily basis.  What kind of tools and knowledge do we need to effectively navigate in a diverse, increasingly complex workplace and world?

How do we define diversity and how do these issues effect us in our everyday work?  How do we create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone in our institutions and how does this impact both recruitment and retention?  How would you describe the culture in your institution regarding diversity and inclusion?

All of these questions will be raised, some answers posed, and a workshop immediately following will explore these issues, in more detail, in an interactive environment.

Myra Hindus is a consultant and the founder of Cultural Intelligence Consulting.  Most recently, she served as the first Vice President for Cultural Diversity at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, from 2006 to 2010.  With over 20 years of experience in higher education, Myra has a proven track record of stepping into newly-created positions, and helping to move institutions forward.  She is an inclusive leader who engenders trust and is effective in advocating for diversity and equity.

She has the ability to mediate conflict, create a safe environment for even the most difficult discussions, and put in place practical policies and goals that align with the strategic vision of organizations.

Myra has also consulted extensively with colleges and universities, non-profit organizations, state task forces, private hospitals, employers, labor unions and community groups.

The keynote is scheduled for Thursday, November 4, 2010, 12:15 – 1:45 p.m.
